Librechair Launcher

Librechair is an open source alternative to the popular Lawnchair Launcher for Android.

If you don’t have a Google Pixel and want a similar launcher experience for your Android phone, Lawnchair and Librechair aim to provide a customizable Pixel launcher experience.

Librechair was developed by Po Lu and is a fork of Lawnchair. This project removes proprietary code in an effort to protect the privacy of its user base. This is important because previously the developers for Lawnchair had placed code that hid certain apps and restricted users from making some changes but they have since reversed those actions after receiving negative backlash.

Free Software – OpenShot Video Editor

OpenShot is a free, cross-platform, open source program that serves as a good alternative to Adobe Premiere and After Effects if you don’t mind missing some extra features.

One thing I enjoyed while using it is the ability to arrange the tracks in anyway you want and place any kind of media in them rather than being restricted to audio and video specific layers like you’ll find in Adobe products.

OpenShot is a solid solution for aspiring filmmakers seeking to get their feet wet without breaking the bank.

Why VLC is the Greatest Media Player of All Time

VLC was developed by the VideoLAN project and is easily one of the most popular programs available on the internet for good reason.

Without installing any additional codecs, you are able to play almost any media file you can throw at it. My favorite feature is the ability to cast media from VLC straight to my Chromecast enabled TV.

Loaded with tons of features right out of the box, this is probably the only media player you need to install for the rest of your life.

Reasons why VLC is lit:

  • Free
  • Open source
  • Cross platform
  • Chromecast support
  • Can convert files to different formats
  • Stream or download YouTube videos
  • Can record your desktop or webcam
  • You can create bookmarks so you can pick up where you left off
  • God tier amount of features
